Plate Tectonics with Milky Way Candy Bars

**This lesson contains food, check for allergies before doing this in the classroom**

Grade: 5-8

Lesson Time: 30 minutes

Materials Required:

  • 1 Milky Way candy bar (or another similar type of candy bar) per student
  • 1 paper plate per person
  • Paper towels for any clean up

Summary:

Students learn about tectonic plates with a Milky Way candy bar. After the demonstration, students can eat the candy bar.

Massachusetts Science, Technology, and Engineering Standards:

  • Earth and Space Science Grade 6-8; Describe how the movement of the Earth’s crustal plates causes both slow changes in the Earth’s surface (e.g., formation of mountains and ocean basins) and rapid ones (e.g., volcanic eruptions and earthquakes)

National Science Education Content Standards:

  • Earth and Space Science Grade 5-8; Lithospheric plates on the scales of continents and oceans constantly move at rates of centimeters per year in response to movements in the mantle. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain formations result from these movements
