Pressing Seaweed

Grade: 1-12

Lesson Time: 1 hour

Materials Required:

  • Seaweed in saltwater
  • A 5 x 8 inch index card or heavy paper (that can withstand being submerged in water, like watercolor paper) per seaweed sample
  • A piece of 6 x 9 inch cotton fabric (from old sheets, pillow cases, etc) per seaweed sample
  • Two pieces of 6 x 9 inch corrugated cardboard per seaweed sample
  • Two pieces of thin 6 x 9 inch cardboard
  • Shallow tray(s) with saltwater
  • Turkey baster
  • Tweezers
  • Toothpicks
  • Wooden boards
  • Heavy weights for pressing (like buckets of sand)

Summary: A great way to integrate art with marine science at all grade levels is to press seaweed. Older grades can then identify the seaweed to species once dried.
