In the winter of 2012, the MME Board of Directors first began to discuss the possibility of conducting strategic planning to address declining membership and conference attendance rates, and to proactively set forth some action strategies for the coming years. With surplus funds from hosting the 2011 NMEA meeting, the Board decided to invest in expert facilitation services, and Just Works Consulting was selected for the job. A Long Range Planning Committee was convened, and this group worked with the facilitator to develop the strategic planning process, identify key questions, coordinate logistics for a Board retreat, and synthesize discussions coming out of the planning process and retreat into a strategic plan. Additionally, a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis was carried out to identify internal and external factors affecting MME’s capacity to thrive.
The major questions asked were:

Where do we want to be?
How will we get there?
Several months of information-gathering preceded a Board retreat. Old membership and conference attendance records were reviewed and summarized. A history of the organization was written [link to History page], membership trends in other organizations were investigated, and a survey of MME members and constituents was conducted. A Board retreat, held in Dennis, MA in October 2012, provided the opportunity for the organization to review findings from these info-gathering efforts, and to identify key work areas. Five focus areas were identified, and

MME decided to reorganize it’s committee structure basically around these focus area, and it now has standing committees for Events, Marketing & Communications, Membership, Finance, and the Executive Committee. These Committees are charged with developing an annual workplan, as well as contributing to the development of MME’s annual budget.
